Health and Safety

Purpose
Students will learn about the requirements of Health and Safety in the workplace in a way that builds trust, confidence and promotes teamwork among pupils.

Course Overview
Theory and Practical lessons covering the following:

  • Responsibilities of employers and employees under the HSW Act are identified
  • Describe the systems approach to workplace health and safety
  • Hazard management controls are explained
  • Explain how hazards are defined in the HSW and proposed HSW Act
  • Describe hazards that may harm workers, the work environment, and organisations
  • Explain health and safety requirements for hazard control
  • Describe hazard control methods
  • Apply risk assessment procedures
  • Identify the principles of workplace safety in a workplace
  • Identifying safe and unsafe work practices
  • Describe good workplace health and safety practices
NZQA Unit Standards 

497       Demonstrate knowledge of workplace health and safety requirements (3 credits)
17593   Apply safe work practices in the workplace (4 credits)
17602   Apply hazard identification and risk assessment procedures in the workplace (4 credits)
17591   Demonstrate knowledge of the prevention and management of Discomfort, Pain and Injury in the workplace (8 credits)
17592   Identify the causes of back injury and methods to prevent back injuries in the workplace (4 credits)
17594   Demonstrate knowledge of hearing conservation in the workplace (3 credits)
22316   Demonstrate knowledge of the management of drug and/or alcohol related problems in the workplace (6 credits)
23540   Demonstrate knowledge of hazards, hazard control, and the consequences of injury in a rural workplace (5 credits)
23542   Identify factors and describe how to manage factors that contribute to injury in a rural workplace (4 credits)
