Trainees will refresh their ability to assess and then manage casualties of an illness and / or accident in complex emergency situations, triage and provide basic life supporting first aid for a short period of time.
Trainees are taught to assess and manage a number of casualties, triage and manage the provision of basic life supporting first aid for bleeding and shock; burns; fractures and soft tissue injuries; poisonings; and heart attack; asthma attack; stroke; and seizure. The course includes practical instruction on supporting the breathing and circulation of a casualty with cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
Most workplaces require First Aid Certificates to be updated every 2 years.

Revision of unit standards:
6400 Manage first aid in emergency situations
6401 Provide first aid
6402 Provided resuscitation level 2
The trainee can apply to have their NZQA record of learning updated and have the later award date for unit standards 6400, 6401 and 6402 added.
Attendance Numbers Minimum of 8, maximum of 15 per trainer
Course Duration 1 day
Trainees must provide evidence that they hold a current or only recently expired 'First Aid' Certificate (A recently expired first aid certificate must have expired within the last 3 months).
The course requires a level of fitness to demonstrate competency for the skill being trained.
Trainees must provide evidence that they have been awarded NZQA unit standards 6400, 6401 and 6402 in the past.
