    Fall Arrest Systems

Purpose
At the successful completion of the course the trainee will be able to; identify the different types of fall arrest systems employed on building and construction sites, and apply the appropriate controls for compliance with the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992 (HSE Act) and other relevant legislation; identify and maintain height work equipment and fall arrest systems; identify and construct anchor points for fall arrest systems; employ fall arrest systems, and plan rescue techniques and emergency procedures for working at height when using fall arrest systems.

Course Objectives
Both theory and practical lessons covering the following:
  • Identify anchor points.
  • Use proprietary fall arrest systems.
  • Install and disestablish straightforward proprietary fall arrest systems using designated anchor points.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the hazards associated with wearing a safety harness and associated equipment.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of safety harnesses and associated systems and equipment.
  • Check and fit a safety harness.
  • Use a safety harness where a fall hazard exists at height.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the rescue plan to be activated in the event of a fall.
  • Retrieve a worker trapped within a system.
NZQA Unit Standards
15757   Use, install and disestablish temporary proprietary height safety systems when working at height
23229   Use safety harness system when working at height

Attendance Numbers     Minimum of 8, maximum of 10 per trainer
Course Duration            2 days

Entry Criteria
Open.
The course requires a level of fitness to demonstrate competency for the skill being trained.

Refreshing learning outcomes above for unit standards 15757 and 23229.

Special Notes
Those qualified with unit 15757 (Fall Arrest Systems) will be able to work unsupervised as well as supervise and manage a group or team.
