To produce a truck mounted crane operator that will have the knowledge, skills and attributes for all essential areas of the units of competency covered in the truck mounted crane course undertaken, enabling the individual to operate a truck mounted crane effectively and safely. The trainee will also be able to demonstrate the appropriate responsibilities of a truck mounted crane operator with emphasis on accident prevention and operator responsibility.
The trainees will undergo formal in class training in association with unit standard 1754 prior to being assessed. This will be followed by the practical aspects of operating a truck mounted crane. Assessments should take 15 to 20 minutes per trainee.
Theory and practical lessons will include the following:
Responsibilities of employers under the HSE Act.
How hazards are defined in the HSE Act.
Prepare load lifting equipment for operation.
Transfer a load.
Secure load lifting equipment for transportation.

Drivers must hold a current driver licence appropriate to the weight and configuration of the vehicle driven, including a current licence endorsement.
The course requires a level of fitness to demonstrate competency for the skill being trained.
