Certificate in Outdoor/Bush Leadership
21 October 2016
Vertical Horizonz New Zealand (VHNZ) has been working with businesses to deliver Unit Standards in Outdoor/Bush Leadership. The training focuses on the lone worker who is out in the wilderness and rural environments and addresses the associate risk involved with being a lone worker.
This is a new offering from VHNZ but is an area with increased interest from employers who have workers out in the wilderness working alone.
Recent courses were held by VHNZ trainer Selwyn Herewini. Selwyn has a 20 year military background and experience surviving in the most remote of places. He has been conducting courses across New Zealand in North Canterbury, Waipara, Tiro Moana Track, Tongariro National Park, Hillary Outdoors to Te Kooti's Redoubt track and Lake Rotopounamu track.
The training package is delivered over 3 ½ days and trainees seem to particularly enjoy the practical navigation which involved using a compass and topographical map. From the Selwyn's perspective it was rewarding to see the trainees understanding the importance of having a plan C, D and E when plan A and B don't work out. The training relates back to real life work situations, particularly where GPS coverage is not available and other devices don't work.
Trainees from the courses reflected that the training taught new skills but also refreshed forgotten information.
People interested in this kind of training may be any lone workers that work in environments where they may be in isolated locations – Council workers, water care, back country lineman, field workers, DOC, MAF and Pest Control.
The course consists of a number of Unit Standards listed below:
20143 Demonstrate knowledge of leadership for outdoor recreation
20146 Apply concepts of basic risk management as an outdoor recreation leader
20159 Gather and apply weather information to an outdoor recreation activity
26249 Demonstrate bush-walking knowledge and skills
