purpose

This programme will provide transferable skills that may be of use to a person seeking to improve their own communications and ability to deliver adult learning sessions. 

Candidates will typically be engaged in adult and tertiary teaching or training. They may be delivering education or training in a workplace as part of their current or intended role, or in the community as a volunteer. 

Completion of the programme demonstrates achievement of the knowledge, skills and attributes required for an adult and tertiary educator early in their adult and tertiary teaching or training career. 


COURSE CONTENT

The programme is delivered over thirty weeks part-time. It includes self-directed work-based or community-based learning because the programme requires considerable self-reflection along with many tasks relevant to the context in which the trainee is working. Delivery also includes two one-day and one two-day face-to-face block courses. The programme has been divided into four compulsory modules

Module One – Adult Learning Principles and Theories (6 credits at Level 4)
The aim of this module is to provide an understanding of adult educational theories and principles and the training context in New Zealand. At the completion of this module candidates will be able to:

  • Describe educational principles and theories and relate them to the adult learning process and own teaching practice 
  • Explain adult learning in the New Zealand context and underpinning frameworks and the application to own teaching practice.


Module Two  – Plan for delivery for learning sessions for adults (9 Credits at Level 4)
The aim of the module is to teach candidates how to plan for delivery of adult learning sessions. At the completion of this module candidates will be able to:

  • Devise learning objectives following the adult learning principles and theories
  • Plan and prepare learning sessions aligned with the learner needs and resources
  • Plan the delivery process and deliver adult learning sessions. 

Module Three – Deliver and reflect on learning sessions for adults (18 credits at Level 4)
This module aims to teach candidates the skills and techniques required to deliver effective learner centred training sessions, use assessment and moderation tools, and review and evaluate teaching effectiveness. At the completion of this module candidates will be able to:

  • Identify strategies for effective delivery of learning sessions
  • Review and evaluate effectiveness of learning sessions
  • Review and evaluate own teaching practice and identify areas for improvement
  • Use assessment and moderation processes.
     

Module Four- Deliver learning sessions for adults (7 credits at Level 4)
This practical module aims to support candidates to deliver effective learner centred adult learning sessions and apply learning outcomes of all modules. At the completion of this module candidates will be able to:

  • Deliver learning sessions for adults using a range of delivery methods and learning aids.

Our Teaching Method

This programme will be delivered through on-line or paper-based distance delivery combined with four days of compulsory face-to-face learning. The face-to-face component will include adult education theories and principles, New Zealand learning context and frameworks, barriers to learning, planning learning sessions, assessment and moderations, reviews, and evaluations. 

On-line or paper-based learning will support face-to-face learning through deeper study of resources provided or researched along with: practice in designing learning sessions, planning for delivery of learning sessions, on-line or social media discussion groups, and preparation for and delivery of learning sessions.

The block courses can be delivered from VHNZ training centers, via Noho Marae, or from workplace or community facilities to suit the candidate’s.


Who Should Attend

Typical candidates will be employed within industry or community roles that involve delivery of training sessions to adults; seeking to improve themselves by increasing relevant skills; and improving their communication knowledge and skills. 

Industry roles could include: Human Resource Officer, professional development co-ordinator, training co-ordinator, team-leader, manager, and sales staff required to give presentations. Community roles could include trainers to voluntary organisations e.g.: Church groups; Red Cross; St John; emergency services; sports coaches; and service clubs such Lions, Lodges, Rotary, and scouting, etc.


Assessment

Assessment will consist of a mixture of written tests/assignments, contributions to on-line discussion groups, preparation of session plans, reflective journaling, and at least three practicum teaching sessions of a minimum of 30 minutes each delivered in the normal teaching context. 

Candidates who do not achieve the assessment on the first attempt are entitled to one free re-assessment but there may be a fee for subsequent assessments. Following the first assessment candidates will be shown where they have fallen short and will be provided with individual training to fill any gaps in skill or knowledge.
