VHNZ welcomes new staff and prepares for the arrival of employers and apprentices.

On Monday 22nd of August we welcomed new staff to our nationwide Programmes and Apprenticeships division. We were privileged to have kaumatua from local iwi at our head office in Tauriko for a powhiri and welcoming ceremony.

This occasion marked the beginning of our induction week, in preparation for the formal transition of apprentices across the motu. We look forward to welcoming apprentices and their employers in Roofing from 1st of September, along with Scaffolding, Industrial Rope Access and Rigging on 1st of October.

Throughout the week, VHNZ senior management, industry representatives and subject matter experts presented to the team on a range of topics, including pastoral care, apprentice and employer expectations, and the future of industry training and development.

“It was a great opportunity to talk to the VHNZ Training Advisors about the training eco-system and journey for our ākonga. It takes a village… is very much our ethos and connecting the trainer, employer and trainee with a holistic approach is what works. The employer can’t do it alone” says Graham Moor, CEO of RANZ (Roofing Association of New Zealand).

We were thrilled to have Tina Wieczorek, CEO from SARNZ (Scaffolding, Access & Rigging NZ Inc) speak with us and very much reiterate that the wrap around support from industry, trainers and employers is fundamental. “Understanding the cultural diversity of our apprentices, to help them with their learning, and to encourage them to be proud of their achievements is really important” says Tina.

Harkin Roofing’s Director, Deborah Harkin took us through the history of the roofing industry, how apprenticeships were first established and feedback from an employer’s perspective on what improvements can be made. “We have worked with Vertical Horizonz for many years and have a great relationship” says Deborah.

We’re really excited about the future ahead as we look to grow strong connections with industry associations, advisory groups, learners and businesses across Aotearoa. “To welcome more people and industry experts into the VHNZ whanau and community is a fantastic milestone” says Ben Johnstone, Chief Executive, VHNZ.
